In order to take your dog for walks it is essential that he learn how to walk on a leash , to start leash training from a puppy gives you a huge head start as it becomes harder to teach leash training to an older puppy or dog.

The control that comes from a leash trained dog will make both you and your dog more confident and relaxed , trying to walk a dog that is constantly fighting and pulling you makes you both stressed ,anxious and could lead to having an unhappy, potentially aggressive dog.

Step one

Hopefully your puppy will be at least a little familiar with treat and reward training and you should really try to initiate your puppy into simple commands such as sit and stay, making sure to reward him with a treat and praise him when he acts correctly.

Step two

The next step is familiarize the puppy to the collar , you should only leave the collar on at short periods at first he will probably try to struggle out of it dont let him go to his sleeping area or crate with his collar, on if he finds he can get out of it ,it will be so much harder to get him to wear it.

Step three

Once he is used to the collar do the same with the leash never leave him alone attached to the leash but put it on him play a little with him walk a few steps until he becomes accustomed to it.

Step four

Use a treat to reward him and let him follow you around while you hold a treat praise him and reward him if he walks close to you just walk him around at home first for small amounts of time increasing the time as he starts to grow more used to the leash and collar .

Step five

When ever he pull stop in your tracks do not yank at the leash or pull the puppy, with patience he will learn that as he walks by your side he is rewarded when he pulls he is not .

This is the very basics of leash training and should be used while the puppy is still small

Once he has had his vaccinations and can go out he will be familiar with the leash then as the puppy gets older you can introduce a small choker chain and start to leash train him properly be sure not to do too much at first begin with short walks .
