Train Your Dog to Stop Barking

.

mainly dogs bark because they are bored, used to a lot of attention and have not been accustomed to being alone, this is usually our own fault,we love our dogs and treat and pet them too much, so its not surprising they complain when they feel neglected

it is essential that we teach our dogs that barking for attention will not work.if we are not paying attention to our dog or he is outside and demands to be in then everytime we react and let him have his own way he learns that all he has to do is bark and you come running.

a very good tip that i have used effectively is to buy a small water pistol and when your dog barks just squirt him in the face just once without saying anything.after a couple of times repeat a command word such as quiet if you persist in this behaviour for several days everytime he barks he will learn that when you say quiet if he dosent shut up he will get squirted.a word of warning  of course this only works for a barking dog do not squirt a dog that is aggressive and ready to bite you it will not have the same effect

some quick tips that will help control a barking dog is

  • see that your dog is comfortable , that he has food and water try to shield his area from distractions such as people and cars
  • most barking dogs are purely attention seekers bear this in mind he was probably used to too much attention as a puppy
  • it is always helpful to embark on a good dog training course your dog will learn how to obey commands and you will learn to praise him only when he acts correctly not for uneccessary things this will mean he will get used to obeying you and his overall behavior will change for the better

it is no use teaching your dog not to bark when you find it convenient if you spoil him with too much attention the rest of the time he should learn that he does not have the right to your attention when he wants . that dosent mean you should not spoil or treat him but only praise and treat him when he acts correctly if you have to leave him alone do not leave him for too long and try to find things that will absorb his attentions such as toys chew toys and dog puzzles(toys that you can hide a treat isnide and he has to find how to get it out) i have sometimes found leaving a television or radio on can be useful as the noise stops the dog feeling too alone.
