The shih tzu looks upon their owners to be strong and dominant, too much petting and praise and treats merely makes them see you as weak. You must have a good reason to reward a Shih tzu if you reward him for no reason and too often he will become confused and you will lose his respect.

History

Shih tzus originated either from china or Tibet there is some confusion as to exactly which. There name translates as lion dog it is believed they were named this because they resembled the long haired lions of ancient mythology.

Believed to be one oft the oldest dog breeds they were almost completely wiped out when the Europeans invaded china, only a few were left, most present day Shih tzus can be traced back to this ancestry.They became popular after the second world war when they were brought back to America and Europe by servicemen.

You should research and keep shih tzu on a healthy diet and be careful when they drink as water can enter their nostrils at face level many owners train shih tzus to drink from pet feeders, sort of water bottles similar to the ones hamsters use.

Shih tzus are prone to overheating and should not be allowed to get too hot.

you can expect a Shih tzu to live between 10 and 20 years and does not need lots of exercise they are often prone to breathing problems and mucus around the eyes it is a good idea to keep their coat short as this helps with their breathing and stops them getting too hot.
