A brief history:-

They were bred from other breeds the first retriever came about in the early 19th century and were specifically bred to retrieve birds for hunters with guns, hence they became known as gun dogs they are very good at retrieving prey without damage due to their soft mouths.

They are very intelligent and love to learn they are easily trained,  patient and eager to please.They make good family pets because of their pleasant nature and their liking for children, Golden retrievers will often surrogate mother other animals such as kittens etc .

Some potential health problems to watch out for are include heart problems, skin allergies, hip dyspepsia, and eye defects. Overfeeding will lead to weight gain.They love water and need plenty of exercise and a good diet.

They are often used by police and armed forces as tracker and drug detection dogs because they have good sense of smell and tracking abilities, their gentle nature also makes them a favorite for people with disabilities and are often used as guide dogs for the blind .

In conclusion if you are looking for a gentle fun loving agile dog that is good with adults and children  then a golden retriever is a good choice but they do need a lot of exercise and they need their mind to be kept active.
